After 21 Day Lockdown! : "COVID-19"

We all must be very much thankful to our Nation, The National Heroes, The Ministers and specially to our PMO for the great initiatives and it's executions.
Being an Indian National, everyone must think about everyone's safety.

We know that lockdown will be over in 21 days but on the exact 22nd day here's what going to happen-
  1. Like some people did during the Janta curfew, now the whole country is suddenly going to run out of their homes with the national flag, playing patriotic songs and shouting slogans like we’ve won a war and talking about how great of a nation we are forgetting that we have not completely eradicated the virus but merely tried to cut it down.
  2. The so called highly educated people of the city are going to flood public places like cinema theaters, restaurants, malls, parks etc. exactly on day 22, because why not. They’re absolutely going to neglect the fact that they can’t altogether abandon social distancing and that the virus may still be out there, let’s hope not but one can never be too careful.
  3. All the small and medium businesses, all corporate offices are going to start working on their normal scheduled time and if I may say, double shifts, extra hours to cover the leftover work of the lock-down period, hosting the employees at large to a possible contamination at large.
  4. The people who have already left for their villages, example our house help or those who work for daily wages will now come back running to the city because of the bad economy and in hope to earn back a little of what they’ve lost. On optimistic grounds, even if one single person of the thousands is seemed to have mild symptoms or not tested and is still hosting the virus due to any reason of negligence or unavailability of infrastructure, now shall travel through a train/bus carrying another 50 people right into the city.
  5. All means of public transport will now be over crowded to and fro throughout the country suddenly exposing loads of people to loads of possibilities of contracting the virus all over again
I’m telling you exactly what’s going to happen on day 22, India is going to forget that we are in the middle of a pandemic, a damn global crisis and everyone is going to get back to their normal lives, leaving behind the masks, sanitizers and forgetting to maintain extreme personal hygiene because hey! We’ve found a cure to the virus, we stayed home for 21 days, now let’s forget it and move on.

This is the reason there are high chances of a second wave of the virus spreading like wild fire into the country. If you don’t believe me, you can check the statistics of this virus called the N1H1 which arose in 2009, where in the exact same thing occurred. As soon as it was contained and people went back to their normal lives, there was a second wave.

So technically 21 days of Quarantine is going to be absolutely useless we educate the people about what exactly is to be done on day 22 because otherwise there is a possibility of another lock-down being declared. We definitely don’t want that.

So here’s what we MUST do:
  1. We act wisely and use our common sense by doing the most basic things; don’t go partying on day 22; try to follow all the instructions you did for the last 4 weeks to the maximum extent; please don’t forget, this is not the end of the virus, this is only the beginning of the end.
  2. We educate and spread awareness about the after effects to people who do not have access to resources and information by sharing this article.
  3. We use this as an official petition urging the government to take into consideration the above points before announcing any further instructions after the lock down is over.
  4. We persuade the government to let the lock-down downsize in separate stages :
  • For example from day 22 say for another week only the essential services shall be open like banks, grocery stores and the frequency of public transportation shall be minimal
  • In the next week the frequency can be increased after monitoring the effects of the spread and the public shall be urged to avoid assembling in large numbers and practice social distancing
  • All public places like theaters, malls, parks shall be the last priority to be open for the public.
  • If possible, even after lockdown is over, Gvt. should implement No Large Gathering rules uptill the period everything normal has been ensured by Gvt..
  • Mask/ covering Nose and mouth must be made compulsory at public places.
  • Small scale industries must be encouraged to manufacture PPE's which must be sold out at nominal rates and reach to the common man at affordable prices.

If we genuinely understand the seriousness of the issue and come together as a single voice in these times of crisis, we can make a huge difference in the lives of 1.3 billion Indians.

I am really a very small boy to suggest but a small change can make a very big difference.

Thanking You,

IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY TRAININGS

Greetings of the day!

Hope all are working in a safe and healthy manner.

The subject mentioned topic is a basic information for all site engineer / in-charge.

Thousands of workplace accident each year can be attributed to one main issue, a lack of proper safety training. Safety training isn’t just a good idea, company / organization regulations require that your personnel must be trained in a proper way.
Often, it is argued that training is unnecessary because the employee in question had many years of experience with the given work. Years of experience will mean that they most likely know how to perform a task, but do they know how to perform it safely? Do they know what is required of them by safety law?

Filling Safety Forms
To help keep your employees safe, a site engineer/ in-charge must start filling up Safety forms on weekly basis. Forms will help site engineers to check the things again and again.  These safety forms must be signed by the team leaders and safety watch person in your team. Safety Form is attached for your further reference.

Additional Benefits of Proper Safety Training
Beyond compliance, safety training is just a good idea. Proper training help workers understand their rights, gives an overview of specific hazards to which they may be exposed to and helps them to be able to protect themselves against those hazards. Engineer / in-charge should demonstrate and continue to demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter.
For example, if your workers do not know how to use, equip and adjust a harness properly, have no concept of fall clearance, are connecting to insufficient anchor points, and/or are not performing satisfactory inspections of the equipment, the training will be deemed inefficient.
This also applies to you, the engineer, the in-charge, the instructor or even the manager. For those of you who have never used / equipped a fall protection harness before, go get one and, with no instruction, put it on. You would be surprised at how much practical knowledge you can acquire by familiarizing yourself with the equipment your workers use on a regular basis.
Try to put yourself at your workers place, answer their questions before they come up and provide practical advice and actional information.

The Cost of Not Doing Safety Training
A couple of hours of downtime for safety training will save you and your company time and money. There is an incredible amount of money spent on medical bills, insurance premium increases, training an injured employee’s replacement, equipment damage and lawsuits.
But, more important than any of this, is the fact that safety training could save the life of one of your employees.

NOTE
Treating your team/subordinates as a family will help each and every one to make a safe work environment.
Every site engineer has to understand their own duty to ensure Safety. Workers/Labors will only understand if you all will give them trainings on daily basis and demonstrate them what exactly safety is and what is it’s benefits.

Hope all are agreed to the statements mentioned above.

You can prevent workers from being unsafe by giving them regular trainings !!
So train your workers and manage your site Safely !!!

Safety Talk Box 07- "Health & Safety Management & PDCA Cycle"

Dear All,

Greetings of the day!

Hope all are working in a safe and healthy manner.

This is a topic introduced by Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Institute of Occupational Safety and Health is registered in England and Wales. IOSH is a charted body for Health and safety professionals.

With the studies given by IOSH, we being the members of organization can set standards and support, develop and connect our team workers with resources, guidance, events and training. We can be the voice of our team workers and campaign on issues that affect millions of working people.
The management system can help you manage health and safety in the organization. Most health and safety or environment management systems are based around the principle of ‘plan, do, check and act’. This is also known as Deming Cycle or Shewhart Cycle or PDCA Cycle.

The key benefits for you and organization of introducing a health and safety management system (HSMS) are: -
·         * Complying with legislative and other requirements
·         * Helping you to deliver the policy (to make objective & targets achievable)
·         * Enabling improved management of safety and health risks
·         * Providing competitive edge (Bench-marking)
·         * Providing senergy with good business management.

Elements of Health and Safety management systems-
·         * Leadership and worker’s involvement: Leadership is an essential part of a health and safety management system- attitudes to safety and health are determined by top management and other individuals, not the organization’s size. To achieve an effective control of safety and health issues, the organization must have clear direction.
·         * Policy: Say what your intentions are—a statement of commitment by the organization’s top management to comply with safety and health law and meet ethical and professional responsibilities for safety and health.
·         * Planning: Plan what you are going to do—a plan for risk management, emergency preparedness and response, with identification of legal and other standards.
·         * Risk Profiling: Identify hazards and evaluate the risks—it’s all about assessing risks, identify what could cause harm, who it could harm and how. It enables an organization to determine what problems there are and to determine the risk management priorities.
·         * Implement the plan: How you are going to do it—a process of putting the plans in place and getting involved in all the necessary activities, from risk assessment through safe system of work, to audit.
·         * Collect data: What type of data do you need to look at? – a process of collecting proactive and reactive data, including job-specific training, risk assessments, number of incidents, injuries and ill health.
·         * Measure performance: Find out how well you’re doing – from reactive data (for example, on injuries and ill health) to proactive data (such as on inspections and training). This will give you an indication of whether your actions are working. Audits will help you to judge whether the whole system is working. You’ll need to make adjustments as necessary.
·         * Learn Lessons: Did you learn anything? – learn from findings of the incident investigations, audits and reviews, in order to find gaps in the in the management system to prevent incidents, injury and ill health and to improve the process and overall performance.
·         * Review performance: Does the system work? – an evaluation of the overall design and resourcing of the system, compared with the performance achieved. It shows the commitment to manage safely and health risks proactively so that accidents and ill health are reduced and/or the system achieves its goals using fewer resources.

Always remember that all these methods have weaknesses but some are less prone to failure than others. So implementing something in your daily works will make a big change in your site work environment.

Safety Talk Box 06- Managing Safely by "Controlling Risk"

Greetings of the day!
Hope all are working in a safe and healthy manner.
This is in continuation to the e-mail “Safety Talk Box 05- Introducing Managing Safely (b)- “Assessing Risk” dt. 02th July, 2018..

In the last topic we had understood how to access the risks in the work environment, what’s next? It’s one thing to know that a risk exists, but you need to know what to do about it.
Risk is an ever-present part of our daily lives, at work and at home. Risk is affected by several factors. For example, the risk of falling from a tower while climbing tower will be affected by the strength of step bolts, ability to climb the tower using step bolts and method of working.

Remember that a worker who is learning to do work on live line is a hazard to himself as well as to others who are working on same line but having a qualified and experienced worker/instructor and dual controls in working helps to control or mitigate the risk.

Risk control involves introducing changes in the way we work in order to minimize risk. Whatever you plan to do, you’ll need to estimate it’s impact on the likelihood and consequences of the risk.

Remember: Risk= likelihood × consequence

Therefore, if you want to reduce risk, you need to look at:
a)      Reduce the likelihood of the hazardous event happening
b)      Reducing the consequence of the hazardous event
c)       Reducing both factors

To show how implementing risk control measures affect, we’ll use the five-point scales for likelihood and consequence that we had introduced earlier-
Let’s suppose, you are working at site for OPGW live line installation-
a)      Reducing the likelihood of the hazardous event: Suppose the likelihood of a worker (working at drum side) coming in contact with saw blade is 4 and the consequence of this is 5, so the risk rating is 20. Immediate action is required.
Providing a guard/ safety gloves will reduce the likelihood of coming in direct contact with saw blade. If we assume that the safety gloves is used most but not all of the time, the likelihood is reduced to 1 and risk rating will become 5.
b)       Reducing the consequence of the hazardous event: Suppose you are working near a place where fire-works are going on and you had placed winch machine at that place. At this stage, the likelihood of the chemical(petrol/diesel) used in winch machine, being exposed to fire is 3 and the consequence of this is 4, giving risk rating to be 12. Which in turn means measures to be taken fast! If the winch machine place is replaced by drum point then the likelihood of the same will remain 3 and the consequence will reduce to 2 giving the risk rating 6.
c)       Reducing both likelihood and consequence: If in point (a), if we use the safety gloves as well as hydraulic cutter then the likelihood will reduce to 1 as well as the consequence will also reduce to 1 which in result will make risk rating 1.

The level of risk which is left after we’ve introduced our control measures is often referred to as residual risk.

How do we decide which risk control to use?
To help decide on risk control, there’s an order or hierarchy of risk control that we can use. Baasically, risk control options at the top of the hierarchy are the preferred option because they are much less reliant on people doing something. The can also protect large number of people. We can categorize risk control options as follows-
1)      Eliminating the hazard
2)      Reducing the hazard
3)      Preventing people coming into contact with the hazard (either by putting distance between people and the hazard or by enclosing the hazard)
4)      Safe System of Work (SSOW)
5)      Personal Protective Equipment (PPE- the last line of defense)

You must provide adequate safety signs if there is a significant risk that can’t be avoided or controlled in any other way.

Always remember that all these methods have weaknesses but some are less prone to failure than others. Usually, risk controls that rely on people to do something or believe in a certain manner are weaker than those that don’t.

So control the risks & manage your site Safely !!!
